Soup is for Winter and Fla-vor-ice is for Summer

This day... it is so nice out. I just want to be in it. I had soup for lunch. And the decision has been made. I don't like soup anymore now that it's warm. Soup = cold weather food. Or maybe if it was dark out I would like it better. Strange I guess.

I took a break and walked around the yard. I didn't go to the studio today. The dogs are keeping me company rather than the sounds of traffc. I wish the iPhone had a better camera in it. It's just convenient and fun to snap photos of things.

Coming back in, I passed the bag of Sour Patch Kids on the kitchen counter and stole one. It was orange, and suddenly out of nowhere I was reminded of eating Fla-Vor-Ice as a kid. Something about the artificial fruit flavor...

Wow just seeing a picture of it that I just found makes me almost able to feel the frosty cold tube in my hands! Marvin and I used to eat this stuff all the time. It was stored in the freezer that was in our garage, so it was pretty easy to access. I remember both of us eating all of the green first. I think orange was my second favorite. And blue was fun because your tongue might turn blue. If purchased today, I wonder if the packaging would be the same – you had to cut off the top to open them. I remember getting the box cutter from Dad's tool bench and using that if Mom didn't give them to us cut open already (she'd use scissors). I also remember finding scissors and angling the sides of the sharp plastic to avoid cutting the sides of my mouth. I preferred to push the ice tube up from the bottom and let the melted, bright liquid collect there to drink afterwords. Marvin liked to eat his and mush his up a little bit into a slushy format. Sometimes, when a chunk would get out too far, it would just fall off. Then it was for the dogs to clean up. I don't think it was ever a big loss, like dropping an ice cream cone. We could just go get another one if we felt slighted. I love how the name is broken up: Fla•Vor•Ice, as if it's some sort of dictionary entry for summer.

Ok flashback over.

Morning of Working not Running

I didn't get up early enough to run this morning before I had to start working. But that's OK. I'll go later. It's going to be a beautiful day. Then I probably won't do anything else until Saturday – I want my legs to be nice and fresh for the possible sprinting I'm going to have to do to keep up with the little runners at the Girls on the Run 5K.

Wow, a bird just played a really long, complicated song right outside the living room window, sang at a constant forte. Dexter is looking and cocked his head as it went along.

Time to get back to work!

Running in the Morning = Two Thumbs Up

This morning's run was very nice - perfect weather while in the shade. It wasn't humid, the skies were clear, there was a slight breeze that played around us. It was one of those desired mornings for a longer run. Good stuff. Overall we went 3.3 miles at about a 9:50 pace. I felt really good. On a side note, I am pretty certain that biking helps my running out a lot. However, my knees have always hurt from biking, so I'm hoping to keep that in check. They never hurt from running, aside from the IT band mishap and the expected achiness after a 14 + miler.

Anyway, I remembered again this morning how much I love running in the mornings. Even though it may take my mind a little time to feel awake, a morning run really gets me going, and keeps me going for most of the day.

This day is crazy busy. So I'm glad I got to exercise already, because I can tell this is going to end up being the type of day where when five o'clock rolls around, I'd rather hit a glass of wine than the pavement. I'm glued to my computer and am thinking about 10 different things at once. One of those thoughts is only three more days until I'm not a solo gig anymore and holy crap can I not wait! (Which reminds me, I'm due an Ode to Bananas here soon.)

Tonight is kickball, so that will be fun to release some energy at the end of the day. And then have a beer later. Or during. Oops, I didn't put the nasty beer in the fridge. Hopefully no one is counting on it for hydration tonight.

Monday Night Riders

Here we are! After 33 miles... the Monday night ride group.
Glen, Rich and me.

Breezy Afternoon

Sometimes when I get overwhelmed or stressed, I find an odd comfort in making plans. Schedules, plans, goals – anything like that.

So today I've been trying hard to NOT spend all my time trying to plan out the rest of spring, summer and fall with race plans, goals and the like. But it's hard not to. I suppose it's kind of my happy place. Talking about duathlons and triathlons last night got me thinking about the Tri for Joe again. I've got 3 more weeks (plus one easy/taper-ish week) of training for it, so they have got to be good days. Quality running and more biking. This weekend I have to get in a brick workout.

Anyway, loose plans...

5K this weekend: Girls on the Run. Should be interesting. Obviously not doing this for time, but helping out.
May 29: Tri for Joe. Really excited about it. Hope the weather is good. Wish I knew other people doing it. I get jealous reading others' blogs where they have a bunch of supporters and friends in the sport :)
June 4-June 13: relaxing in Greece. I do hope to run while there though. I can imagine that running around the island will be fantastic.
After Greece: Start training for Columbus. While also training for more duathlons. That's right, I'm just going to be endurance girl.
July 11: Caesar's Creek Duathlon or July 17: Fit to Fight Duathlon/Triathlon. Not sure which one yet.
August 29: Hueston Woods Duathlon. Wanted to do this last year...sounds fun.
October 17: Columbus Marathon. Shave time off last year?
Other stuff. Interspersed weekend 5Ks here and there. Because they're quick and fun! See if Casey will do one/some.

So again, loose plans. I don't know if I'll do all of these events, if they interfere with other plans for the summer, or if I'll exchange some with others. Having started biking more already this season than I ever have in years past, I'm really discovering I love it. And I love doing duathlons. So I'm really excited to do more of those this year.

That is all. Loose plans. I feel a little better now - just like thinking about it.

And Then There Were Three...

Monday night's group ride went well, for the most part. It was me, Rich and Glen, and then a new person - Rachel. She hadn't ridden much on roads yet, or maybe even in general yet. So when I got there Rich told me we'd probably only do 20 miles. Not to mention Rich's 400 miles in 4 days trip is this weekend, so he wasn't interested in doing anything too crazy obviously. However, after we were discussing what routes to do, we netted out on the same route that I did with them the first time: up the bike trail, getting off in South Lebanon and then going on a rolling mogul on the other side of the river, then back down the bike trail from Morrow. This is about 33 miles. I was interested in how this would feel since I had done it before.

We started out from the store, in some very heavy traffic to get to the trail by Arrowhead apartments. There was some sprinting involved in order to beat traffic and lights - fun! Once on the trail, we cruised along at an easy pace. I chatted with Rich a little bit. He was pointing out different wildflowers that grow along the trail and are coming into bloom right now.

There was a lot of traffic on the trail. After all it was 75ยบ and sunny after a wet rainy weekend. I learned some more pack-riding terms. I think slipping in was one, when you're riding two up and one person has to slip behind the leader, therefor the person behind has to let them slip in. And Rich would usually say bike left when there was oncoming bike traffic.

When we got to the Powder Factory, jokes were made about the last ride and me waiting at the Powder Factory in the dark. I said "there's my bench!" referring to the bench I sat on for a long time. And Glen said "what? I didn't see a bench!" referring to how when they picked me up it was pitch black. We laughed some more about that ride evening.

At South Lebanon, we assessed how Rachel was feeling. She said she was good. She was nervous about going on the roads with the traffic though. This road didn't have too much traffic last time, but you never know. Glen explained to her the hill drop and to just stay with whoever was in front so we weren't all too spread out. Rich explained we'd get up around 30 mph. For me, that was what worried me about her - it's a little startling to be going that fast all of the sudden and hold your line next to the road if you aren't expecting it. So I was hoping she didn't hit her breaks or anything with Glen behind her. Then we were off. The little hill that you climb before the decent was nothing this time! I can't believe I thought it was a hill at all the first time!

We plunged down the hill and it was awesome! I think I topped out around 31 mph. We kept moving around 19 - 20 mph. We got to an intersection where we could go back across a bridge and get back on the trail and assessed how Rachel was doing. She said she could go on, so we did. Glen explained drafting to her. She was second at this point, behind Rich. Then me then Glen. Before I knew it we were done with the road section and ready to get back onto the bike trail. That was it? That was cake! I was pleasantly surprised/shocked at how easy it was. I guess the hilly 35 mile ride really helped for my legs to have some perspective of what hills and climbs are!

Back on the trail, we stopped in Morrow for Rachel to use the bathroom at an ice cream shop. Then when we started out again, but just feet down the road had to stop. Rachel had a flat. No problem - we pulled over to the old rail road depot station... except she didn't have a tube. And her bike is miniature, smaller than mine. I offered my tube before realizing her tire is a 600 while mine is a 700. So she called her inlaws who live in Lebanon to pick her up, and after making sure it was ok and exchanging some cell phone numbers, we left her at the ice cream shop. Aww.  Later she called Rich to confirm she was picked up and said she'd be back in two weeks, and with a tube! Lucky her, just had to wait at an ice cream store... much better than a bench beside the powder factory in the dark! lol  Many more jokes were made about Rich and his curse of dropping riders on rides.

So it was just the three of us on the way back. I thought maybe we'd go a little faster on the way home, but we didn't really. There were a few sprints to get around people which was fun. Glen can really move on the bike. Since I was always behind them, when they'd take off I had to really work to catch up, so that kept it interesting. Glen and I chatted a little about triathlons. He's probably going to do Caesar's Creek. I was trying to talk him into doing the Tri for Joe as a practice one. It appears he and I might be about the same running pace. But he probably rides in the mid-twenties for those races. I'm very very curious what I'll be able to pull off for the bike portion of the Tri for Joe.

It was almost a little boring coming back down the trail. I much prefer the ride we did that I bonked on that was out in the country on the rolling, curvy hills. But it was a great ride! The only bad thing was my stomach started hurting around mile 7, kind of similar to the night I bonked. I definitely had eaten enough food. I'm not sure what was going on. I kept trying to straighten up a little, thinking maybe the hunched over position was causing it. In a way, I'm glad it was such an easy ride because I'm afraid if I had to push myself maybe it would have gotten worse? I don't know - need to figure this out though.

When we got back to the store, Rich insisted on the three of us having our picture taken. He bugged someone sitting outside of Starbucks to snap of photo of us for a newsletter that he has to do for the store. When I get the photo from him, I'll post it here.

So - it was a great ride. 33 miles like that is nothing now, which really surprised me, pleasantly. I'm really looking forward to another hill ride, and maybe ramping up the distance into the 40s!

The sky was very neat looking when I got home. Big clouds moving in and the wind picked up quite a bit.

Advantages

So might need to make an amendment to the Ode to Cuties post. I seemed to have a bit of an allergy reaction after eating them this morning. Haven't had anything else to eat or drink except coffee, so not really sure what was going on. I got itchy all over (still am a little bit) and had the chest pain like I did when I ate almonds. So I went home to where the benadryl is. Haven't taken any and I'm fine. But...now I'm working from home on this stupidly gorgeous afternoon - yay! At least I can be outside!

Cuties

Ode to Cuties

You're easy to peel
And fun to eat.
After opening you up
The room smells sweet.

Sometimes your skin
Comes off in one peel,
Other times in small pieces
Making a difficult meal.

This morning I ate three of you.
Two of you were good.
I'd like some more consistency please
From my cutie food.

I'm busy, really I am.

Monday Morning

Wow it is a gorgeous morning. I wish I could have just sat outside on the back porch, on the comfy loveseat with the dogs and a cup of coffee, catching up on reading. But here I am at my studio. :)  It was a beautiful short drive to work. The moon was still out and everything was very misty. The sky is perfectly blue. It's going to be a tough day to stay motivated!

I forgot my checkbook for rent, so I guess I'll go home for lunch and get that. And it's Monday, which means there's a group ride, so I'll also grab my bike and gear for that tonight! I need a do-over after the last ride and bonking. I'll make sure to take some food with me this time- wearing a new jersey with pockets = no excuse! I don't think they went last Monday because it was rainy, so we'll see what is in store. In fact, now that I think about it, I think Rich has a big 4-day, 400 mile ride coming up this weekend. So maybe we will go pretty easy. I don't care, I just want to get out there and ride.

And now it's time to be productive. I've already crossed some things off of my list this morning. Sometimes I put "gimme's" on my list just so I can have something to cross off and feel good for accomplishing it. Such as: "Sit down in front of computer" or "open blinds".  Ok, not really ;)  My list is really long though and has everything on it from work projects to looking for hotels for our trip to Greece. And oh how the weeds at home are calling my name... They've scrawled their presence onto my list as well.

This is what our house is going to look like soon if I don't address those weeds this week:

Weekend

This weekend was the Flying Pig marathon. Back in October after the Columbus marathon, I definitely wanted to train for the Pig. But my IT band said otherwise, and as I've been whining on this blog for the past few months, I was side-lined and have been slowly been getting back to running without pain (and with some help from the Evil Foam Roller.) I would say I'm healed now, at least for normal distances. But I am going to be extra careful when I start to ramp up the mileage into marathon distances again. It was kind of rough knowing I couldn't participate, even for the half. I felt a little left out.

But it's OK - I am having a great time running regularly these days. Saturday I went out in the rain for what I think was about 3 miles. I don't care enough to fight the clunky Mapmyrun.com site to check for sure. It felt good and I felt strong, though I kind of faded at the end. Some highlights from the run: a girl in her front yard acting like a rooster (all by herself) and goose poop minefields - always fun.

This week I'd like to redeem my 35 mile ride that I bonked on and go with the group Monday night. It's supposed to be near 80!  If it's dry, we'll go. Maybe give one of the new bike jerseys a try.

Right now the sky is a very eerie gray. I was looking forward to some cool thunderstorms this afternoon, after we were done playing disc golf. But they haven't really happened, and it's just soggy out. Man I love thunderstorms. Maybe they'll happen tonight after it's dark and I can watch the lightning light up the room.

Long Week

So the countdown is on until the switch from SSC to Fill Creative! And man, it can not come soon enough. I think I have the same kind of fever you get when you're about to go on vacation. Suddenly, all you want to do is go on vacation - screw all the work! This week has been rough. Everything just seems to have been flying at me all at once. But I have still managed to get all of my planned workouts in, so I'm happy about meeting that part of my recent "goals". Today I am not sure if I'll have time to sneak a run in before heading down to Covington to meet up with Greg and his work friend (who goes by "Dude"). But here's hoping!

I am working at Lux today so I went over to the lovely cafeteria to purchase the worst veggie sandwich I've ever had. But at least I got to walk outside. It is really windy out - so a run would be pretty fun! A bike ride, however, would not.

So last night I was overwhelmed with work, but Christen was able to help which saved me 4 hours that I didn't have! I emailed her some files and she did it and emailed it all back - beautiful.  Recently when I've been talking to people here at Lux, I start to tell them how things are changing soon and I'm getting a partner. I get giddy talking about it! So far everyone has been very receptive and excited about it. I still need to figure out exactly how to let them all know...maybe some kind of letter? It's got to be quick and simple.

You know what else is on my mind? Weeds!! They are out of control at the house and I think when I was working in the wee hours of the morning last night I heard one trying to get into the house. Maybe I'll get to that this weekend a little bit too - once the ground is nice and soft from the rain. The battle is on weeds. You're gonna lose.

Oh boy, my belly is not liking the sandwich as much as I didn't like it. Trying to dilute it with some water...

Track and Longest Run Thus Far

This week is crazy, and it's ending with the most craziness. But I need a break, so here I am writing.

Tuesday was track night. It was windy!

Here's the flag to prove it.

I got there first, as usual, waiting on the southern working commuters :)  I went to the bathroom to change. I must say, I felt like I could eat off of that bathroom's floor. It was sparkling! Here's a picture of me giving my thumbs up approval.

Greg and Roman finally arrived and I snapped a picture of us. Numerous ones, actually, but this one was the least head-chopping one.

I had warmed up a mile before they got there. Then I did a bunch of 100s all within 21 - 23 seconds. I only had my phone to use as a stopwatch because I forgot my watch, so that was kind of annoying. After doing maybe 4 or 6 100s, I met up with Greg and Roman again and asked what they were doing...and suggested ladders for them. :)  So they did 100, 200, 300, 400 and then back down. Not sure if they repeated 400 twice. Meanwhile I did a step-stool, lol. I did another 100, then 200, 200, and finished with 100. I was spent after that last 100. The wind and excessive amount of children to avoid while out there took it out of me. I jogged, catching up with Roman and Greg as they finished their sets.

Next week we need to figure out what lane is going to not have waste-high kids flailing around in it. I'm really worried I'm going to plow one of them over and that would not be pretty.

Wednesday morning I ran 4 miles with Casey and it was great! That is the farthest I've ran since my IT band injury, so I'm soooo happy! And it was the morning after track! I can't wait to start ramping up the distance.

In other news, my new bike clothes arrived! I've tried them all on and everything fits except the Grateful Dead tank and the bike shorts. So I think I'll send them back and get sizes up.

Today I'm taking a day off. We had kickball last night and from sprinting to the bases a couple of times I kind of tweaked my quad. I'll see what I'll do tomorrow - maybe a run maybe a bike ride.

Bike Clothes

Since I've been doing more road biking recently, and because bright colors and pockets are cool and necessary, I decided I should try to find some not 80 dollar jerseys if they exist out there. I started searching on Amazon and found a few, but decided to try to stick to just one brand for sizing/returns ease. So I ended up on Primal Wear's website – they make cycling apparel (including custom team kits - how cool would that be!?)

So I found some pretty good deals on some sweet summer riding wear.

Even though it's black...

I couldn't care less about the Grateful Dead, but this was $10.

The pattern is cogs screened back. Pretty cool.

And this one was called Candy. I think the name makes it more appealing... at least it's bright!

I also got some new shorts - I hope they fit. Kind of hard without trying them on, but they were only $30, which is CHEAP for padded cycling shorts.

It should arrive pretty soon! Now I won't have to wear the same jersey each time I ride!

Unsuccessful Spinflixing

So this was the feature presentation tonight for Spinflix Theater...

(Interview with the Vampire) But here I am bagging it and just watching the movie instead. :(

This movie has such a large range in the volume. So basically I either couldn't hear conversations or was jumping out of the saddle when something sudden would happen. I couldn't get the subtitles to work for some reason (I'm pretty certain we've watched Netflix with subtitles on before, but maybe it was only because it was a French movie). I remembered that Greg got a headphone extension of some sort, so I got that and tried to get it to work with the receiver. I'm just not good with cords and understanding what goes where. After trying many things, I just couldn't figure it out. Then I banged my head really hard on the shelf above the TV - arrgh!

So I got back on my bike, frustrated. And there basically wasn't anything to get out of the movie since I couldn't follow it. I didn't feel like staring at nothing, or perhaps finding something else to watch that didn't require following so closely. So, again, here I am just watching it. Boo for the failed workout.

But this is one of my favorite movies, and I haven't seen it in years. I forgot how much I enjoy the soundtrack too.

It's Official...

My new business partner gave her two weeks at her current job today...
so her official last day is May 7th!!!!! Yay Christen!!!!!!

After 2 years and 8 months, Stephanie Smith Creative will become Fill Creative, keeping the same clients and working to gain more, with Christen and I as partners. It's going to be great. As this has been in development I couldn't really write too much about it. So more details later, but I'm just so happy that it is at long last happening! It's going to be so much fun. I feel relieved, happy and very excited about the adventures ahead!
